I met
John in 1967 at the end of a Sunday TSD with UPS math class
date. John was promoting his first Olympus
Rally in 1968 so we ran. Our Karmann Ghia finished 109 of 211 but we had great fun.
I was hooked and John provided
frequent inspiration, reflections below... Jerry Hines
- On John's 1973
Olympus I ran a Corvair powered Porsche 356.
We ran out of fuel but loved it, and participated in every
Olympus through 1985.
- After rolling the
Porsche on 1973
Nor'Wester I joined RASC. In 1977
I became rallymaster, and John was a great mentor as Olympus
& Nor'Wester grew.
- In 1973 John ran
Mexico's Rally
Internacional de las 24 Horas, and got me &
Mark Nolte to run 1978. We towed my Colt to Mexico City with
Jim Nagel & Sue Larsen, and John was there too.
- In 1979 John got
Mexico's "24 Horas" in the NARRA
championship, bringing teams like John Buffum
(TR8) & Dan Goodwin (Fiat 131 Abarth). Gary Diebolt
& I ran a rented Datsun and John helped officiate in his
"Victory Driving Products" van.
- In 1980 I organized
RASC's "Long
Winter's Night" (John entered) to test Mexico's "Monte Carlo" format, then
copied it for 1984 Alcan
5000.
- By 1986 John's
Olympus was part of the World Rally Championship, and the 1986-1988 Olympus
are unlikely to be matched.
- In 1998 grad studies
I discovered things like "team learning" & "shared vision"
John exemplified. He was a great model of building
organizations from the ground up, and treating volunteers with
enthusiasm & respect.
John
was a kind, caring person, and extremely competent &
dedicated organizer.
Happy trails John, and we'll
remember you in every forest...
